Cambridge

The holidays in Cambridge are Sketchbook (scrapbook, journal) holidays.

Each day you will sketch in the beautiful university of Cambridge, a city of contrasts and changing vistas, narrow streets, wide dignified courts, bustling streets alongside majestic colleges and spacious park areas. In the summer it is very cosmopolitan with all its overseas visitors.

The focus of this holiday is to develop your observation and drawing skills. Drawing in this sense means drawing with pens, pencils, paint and including collage, words and photographs. During the week your sketchbook will evolve and develop in your own style. Some books may be full of detailed line drawings and others may be full of collage and colour.

Each morning, we will leave the college and walk a short distance (10-20 minutes) into the very heart of Cambridge. You can choose to sketch the view through the trees across the River Cam to the beautiful colleges beyond, or the winding streets and alleyways that lead to the market square or focus on small detailed carvings and ironwork. Karen will help you to choose the best views to build your confidence.

We may use the colleges, cafes, and museums and galleries as source material. The Fitzwilliam Museum, Kettle’s Yard, the Museum or Archaeology and Anthropology and the Museum of Zoology are all in the centre. Also the Botanical Gardens have lovely greenhouses with a huge range of fantastic plants to draw. Entry fees are not included in the holiday price.

You will have time of your own to visit these museums and attractions too. You could also try punting, attend concerts and plays or picnic by the River Cam.

ACCOMMODATION AND MEALS

You will be staying in Newnham College, in the centre of Cambridge. It was the second women only college (women only applies just to university terms) opened in 1875. It is set back from the main roads and has extensive gardens  - good for sitting. strolling, and sketching.

Your breakfast and dinner at the college is buffet style in the light and modern cafeteria. At lunch you are free to choose, there are many cafes, restaurants, and sandwich bars in the centre.

The holidays start on a Sunday (with the exception of July 13 that starts Monday) and finish the following Friday. You would be expected to arrive on the Saturday evening and depart on the Saturday morning. If you have problems with these arrival/departure times please contact me and we will fit your plans in to the schedule. In this week there is a free day for you to visit attractions nearby or possibly visit London for the day (1 hour on the train) Saffron Walden (market town 20 minutes away)

This holiday gives you the time to learn new skills and develop your own drawing style. You will have a great sketchbook to enthuse you to carry on working when you return home.
